Cedar Rapids History

Cedar Rapids was originally established in 1838 as the town Columbus by William Stone. In 1841 it was renamed by N.B. Brown and his associates. They named the town Cedar Rapids for the rapids in the Cedar River at the site, which was named for the large number of red cedar trees that grew along its banks. Cedar Rapids was incorporated on January 15, 1849. The economic growth of Cedar Rapids increased in 1871 upon the founding of the Sinclair meatpacking company.

Attractions and Entertainment

In 2008, Cedar Rapids, Iowa experienced a devastating flood of the Cedar River – reaching a record crest of 31.12 feet – 19 feet above flood stage. About 10 square miles, including most the downtown area, were inundated with flood waters, impacting more than 5,000 homes and over 1,000 businesses. Through the help of federal grants, a complete revitalization occurred, with a new main branch of the public librarya hotel and convention center and a new federal courthouse. In addition, the Newbo District, a neighborhood near downtown, has come back to life. The NewBo City Market features local restaurants and is in the heart of the neighborhood, which features performance spaces, shops, artists’ studios, and the Ruhl&Ruhl Realtors office in Cedar Rapids.
